This small addition succeeds on Several
fronts: It’s a welcoming entrance, a stylish
mudroom, and a spot to enjoy garden views.

s often happens w ith owners o f old houses, Julie and
Tom Fergus never used the fro n t door o f th e ir hom e
in W olfeboro Falls, N ew Ham pshire. “ It ju stw a sn ’t
convenient because the drivew ay goes to the back o f the
house,” Julie says. T h a t’s w here they found the perfect spot
fo r th e ir new entry—the corner w here the w alls o f th e ir liv in g room and
din in g room meet. Instead o f sim ply cuttin g a hole fo r a doorway, the
couple added on a m in i room that im proves the look and fun ction o f th e ir
house. The 9 x l0 -fo o t space also solved drainage problem s caused by rain.
The Ferguses started at the to p —positioning the p itch o f the addition’s
ro o f ju st below an upper-level w indow , w h ic h elim inated the need for
m ajor reconstruction to the existing exterior. “W e d idn’t w ant a fla t ro o f
because o f the water,” says Julie, so a gabled ro o f design directs rain away
fro m the house and the new entry door.
